Schutzhund

Batman on My Blog - Sun, December 02 2007

Lots of people want to know about my favorite activity, which is Schutzhund. You can google it and learn all about it.

But, the fun part is a man wears this big burlap-covered sleeve and I get to jump up and bite it. Some people think this makes me mean, but let me tell you, it doesn't. It gives me lots of activity, which I need so I don't get bored and it gives me lots of good obedience skills.

Most people think only full-blooded German Shepherds or Dobermans can play this game, but then they see me. They laugh to see such a little guy do what the big dogs do. I just passed my first Schutzhund test, which is called a BH. It is pretty boring. Just heeling, sitting, downing, walking through a group of people, then a judge has to make sure you are a safe dog to take in public, so I had to go by walkers, joggers, a bicyclist and someone walking a dog, then someone stopped to ask us for direcitons. My mom had to leave me tied up for a minute while she hid behind a car and lots of people walked by me, but I didn't mind. I knew I had to pass this test so I can now try for a Schutzhund I title.

Our judge for the trial was from Belguim and he said I was a little dog with a really big heart. He thinks I just might make that Schutzhund I title. I sure am going to try. In the meantime I also enjoy the dog activities St. Huberts puts on in Indianapolis.

Also, some people think this will be a sport to get a guard or protection dog. But, we don't do that. This is just a sport and we have fun and at the end of the day we are just dogs who have learned behaviors. I'm more likely to lick anyone who breaks in than try and stop them, unless of course someone breaks in who is wearing a bite sleeve!

Hi Batman! My mom and dad were thinking of sending me to be trained for Schutzhund also. I have already received my Good Canine Citizenship award. But, they were wondering where do you go for training here in Indianapolis and is it very expensive?

cool, batman! we have several friends who do Schutzhund!(they are from other states) they are all GSD's, too. have you ever heard of french ring sport? that is very cool, as well. i admire the control that the handlers have over the dogs to do the sch sport. we have many friends in law enforcement that are K9 handlers, that do bite work. of course, joe is not trained in this, just SAR. we don't want a dog that wants to bite the guy he finds, LOL. ;o)

where do you train? i'd really be interested in going to any of the trails if they hold them here around indy!

Wow! That's really cool! My favorite activity is sleeping but this sounds like it could be fun, you know if you are into being active and that kind of stuff. Keep up the good work and I am sure you will get your title!

Thanks for all the nice posts.

Dixie we have two American Bulldogs in our club and they are doing fine in Schutzhund even though they look lots different than us shepherd looking dogs.

If anyone wants to know more about the Indianapolis area Schutzhund club I belong to, just send a message to my mom and she will tell you all about it.

Batman, I have seen this on tv. You guys look sooo mean but, I know you are not. You are so well behaved and attentive to your masters. You can be sooo into it one minute and the master gives the command and you obey. Wonderful!!!

We had a Schutzhund trained GSD for many years. He was SUCH a good dog. We got to watch him work prior to adopting him, and man, was it impressive! He had lived as a guard dog for the first 5 years of his life, and we were unsure how he would adapt to a family, but he bonded almost as well as a puppy.
