We are fosters for Hamilton County Humane society and they are always in need of foster parents, as are all shelters. You fill out an application and tell them what you can foster, how long, etc... What they need help with are pregnant mom cats/dogs (just got a phone call last week to foster, but can't right now) or dogs/cats with special needs to prepare them for adoption. Don't take this the wrong way, but fostering isn't a "try out" period for your family. LOTS of foster parents fall in love with the animal they are fostering and end up adopting (we call ourselves "foster failures" LOL), but ultimately, our job is to rehabilitate, give a quite environment to new moms, or socialize. This is not meant to discourage you fromt fostering, just be aware of what fostering is all about.
I am an admitted "foster mom failure". LOL My friends all knew I wouldn't be able to foster Yogi. They kept saying, "You're not going to give that dog up." I was like, "Yes, I will." I kept saying to Yogi, "Don't get too comfortable here, buddy." Well, three years later, guess who's still here. I totally agree it shouldn't be used as a try out period. I think you have to be a really special person to foster. I just couldn't do it. (I'm glad I failed, though, because I wouldn't have this wonderful boy living here at my house!)
