Totally OT: I need a mom's input!

NosyRosie on Health - Mon, May 12 2008

Okay, I feel a little silly asking this question but seeing as I've never experienced this before, and have never seen it in my line of work, I have no freaking idea what to do! And asking my dad is useless as this problem loses something in translation (I can't explain what lymph nodes are).

I have swollen lymph nodes under my chin. The right side is more swollen and has been since yesterday afternoon. I first noticed it when I turned my head and found it somewhat painful to do so (but pain in under my neck and not my entire neck). My husband noticed that the nodes on my left side are now visbly enlarged. I found it difficult to tuck my chin towards my chest because of the right sided discomfort. I can also only turn my head to the side so far before it aches. I'm taking Ibuprofen twice a day and keeping a warm pack on it this evening.

At what point do I see a doctor (I know that sounds like an extremely stupid question but I have never been one to take any of my own advice that I get paid to dish out). I have no other symptoms of allergies...no coughing, sneezing, draining sinuses. Does this go away on its own??

Thanks moms. ;P

This happpened to me when I had an allergic reaction to medicine 4 days after I stopped taking it. I had to go to ER as it was slowly closing off my windpipe. Because of that and the unknowns of how allergies can pop up on things you never reacted to before, I'd go in asap to my doctor.

My lymph nodes have been swollen before when my allergies are acting up.

If you have no other symptoms I would probably just keep an eye on it. I have had swollen glands there before as well. If I remember correctly they are your parotid glands, but what the heck do I know? I'm a mental health nurse. If your brain swells, call me ☺

I know exactly what you mean!! I usually go into panic mode, 'this is it....' Mine go down after about 3 or 4 days of it being tender. I don't actually ever feel like I'm sick when it happens, either. Weird. I've never gone to the dr. becuase my mom's a nurse (and Lola, too...) and I tell her all about it. She says, "if they don't go down in a week, go have them checked."

I would freak out and call my doctor's office. I don't like swollen things anywhere on my body.

There were a few years when I got that way every Spring. The prettier the Spring, more pain did I have. I went to the dentist to see if I had a bad tooth...nothing was found.
That has passed and now I just get sinus pressure. As we all know every person is different. If you still have it next week, a trip to the doctor may be needed. For now...I'm blaming the weather.
