I am a very lumpy dog! I'm 13 and take Cosequin daily and Rimadyl when I need it. The fatty lumps that I have are called lipomas. Nothing to worry about as long as they don't get too big and bother you. I had one removed a while ago becuase it was kind of rubbing under my armpit. It's growing back, but in a different spot further away. I'll just deal with it! Anytime you feel a lump on your dog, it's best to have it checked but most are just fatty.
My lumps have been aspirated so many times.... *sigh*
Poor ol Jasper has a big fatty tumor on the front of his chest, which is a very common place for dogs to get them.It does not cause any discomfort, and we are not going to have it removed, as it does not bother him. Jasper is about 10 or so, and I have been giving him supplements for a few years, I really think it helps him! He gets 1000 MG of Ester C, 2 glucosamine pills, one baby aspirin, and Ultra Oil (about teaspoon full) daily with his food. I have also given Alfalfa and Yucca, which are natural anti-inflammatory, when he has been more "gimpy" than normal. I got a homeopathic remedy at the health food store that also helped out when he was limping. I don't really want to give anything like steroids, or other vet meds, until absolutely necessary. It sucks to see them get old, that's for sure.
We all get Ultra-Oil at our house, too. We always get compliments on our beautiful fur.
Kelly, do the yucca and alfalfa work well for Jasper? I've been looking into the yucca for Wiggles, whose age is really starting to show. Also, where do you buy it at? I'm open to anything that will make him feel better that will also help to avoid steroidal treatment. Acupuncture is on my list, too.
I honestly think it does make a difference. I have also given it to Joe when he was worn out after working a lot, and maybe a little limpy, or just not as limber as normal. It would probably take a couple days to see any difference. I just got these at the health food store at Mitthoffer and Washington Street, I forget the name, but it's by that bar and the used CD store. :)
