Lab mix

Melissa on Activities - Mon, May 19 2008

Anyone see the lab mix on craig's list this morning. I am seriously considering taking her and trying her as a companion for my Sammy. The owners are willing to let us try it and if it doesn't work, taking her back and getting her a new home. What do you think? 55 pound lab mix with a 13 pound mini dachshund? Could they be friends?

They may very well become friends, but just be SO careful that your little doxie doesn't get hurt even while innocently playing. Big dogs can do damage to little ones without knowing it. I worry about my corgis playing with Lola, and they're only 30 lbs...

I can speak firsthand to this! Just read my mom's last posts about my limp-drama and going to the vet.

Ditto to what everyone else said. Given that Sammy has already required surgery on her neck/back, she is probably better off playing with dogs closer to her own size. Big dogs and small dogs can play together but sometimes the little ones get hurt accidentally. I would also look for a younger dog. I know that losing your other dog was so difficult and this lab is already 8 years old. On a small dog, not that big of a deal because they would probably have many more years. On a larger dog like this, he probably doesn't have that many more years and I think it would be really hard on all of you to lose another dog that soon. Just my thoughts though. He could live another 6 years or so if he's lucky.

I've lived with a lab named Truman, the big yellow thing that looks like a horse, for just over a year. I can hold my own, but sometimtes he gets rambunctious and I flee the scene and hide. Dad's had to calm him down a few times because I like to follow him and nip at his ankles and bark at him. But then there are the times when Truman lays on his back and lets me and mona climb on him and lick his face... he even curls up next to our cat and takes naps - labs are pretty gentle, too!

Thank you all so much for your comments. You make great points. I think I will abandon that thought and look for a smaller companion. Thanks much!
