And I quote... "This is a shelter that has changed dramatically in our experience. Where we once had to fight with them to get dogs released to us, they now call us whenever there is a dog that they feel that they cannot adopt out to see if we are interested." So the constant allegations that they never contact breed rescues is false? Hrmmmmmm...
We had our name in at the HSI for Corgi rescues/fosters years ago. Never did they call us! WE were the ones who happened to go in there the day Hoover was up for adoption at the price of $75. A purebred puppy corgi. I don't care if the dog is adoptable or not. If there is a person or group willing to take that dog to make room for one who is NOT eligible for a breed rescue, then by all means call the rescue group!!! All they want is money and the checkmark on their list to say they adopted out another dog. GRRRRR!!!
Well last year the midwest bloodhound rescue could NOT get them to surrender a bloodhound to them, and I was told that the HSI was regularly a PIA when it came to giving up a purebred to a breed rescue, so IMO, this rescue just has not had a bad experience with HSI yet. JMO. I'm sorry, but I feel certain breeds, especially frequently given up breeds, should be in their BREED rescue, not in an all breed shelter that puts them up for the highest bidder. :(
While I am happy to hear that the Basset rescue's experience with HSI has been more positive lately, HSI should be contacting breed rescues EVERY time a purebred comes to their shelter so they can have more room for muttbloods and other equally adoptable dogs. EVERY TIME. There is really no excuse for them only calling if they have one they think they cannot adopt, because that means that other dogs are dying while they are charging an outrageous amount of money. I will never agree with their "sliding scale" for dogs. My husband charges a sliding scale based on ability to pay for his clients, and this is for THEIR benefit, not his.
I wrote to David Horth about this, but didn't hear anything back yet. I found a one year old ACK bassett puppy in the Star for $300. Why would I want a 4 year old for that price? Also, I found out from someone who saw it, that the cocker spaniel does only have one eye. I posted it looked like it only had one eye, but I thought that was just the way the photo came out.
