Socializing

Rhonda on Activities - Tue, June 17 2008

Jake is finally settling into our household and we are pretty much over the growly moments with our pack. Now it is on to socializing him with humans. Jake is fine with us and my father-in-law but all of his human interaction is happening at our house. I need some advice on where to take him to get some human interaction but not be overstimulated because he has some issues. We live near Lafayette and Kokomo but neither has a really good place where we can take Jake. Lafayette has a Petsmart but I'm afraid to chance all the human and dog interaction just yet. So do you all have any suggesions? Both my husband and I have the weekend off and were thinking about taking a trip and I thought we might take Jake with us. Any good places in or around Indy that are dog friendly but won't have LOTS of dogs? Its suppossed to be beautiful this weekend so outdoor activities are preferred but we're willing to go anywhere.

I took Penny to the park to work on her social skills last weekend. I armed myself with a big bag of liver treats and off we went! She did remarkably well. I'm amazed how much she's relaxed in just a week's time. AND, no accidents since last Friday either.

I would suggest a park, or if you're heading to Indy, walk the Canal. Good luck!

You could always take him to a Petsmart during their "off" hours, when it's not too crowded. You could ask the manager there what time is less crowded. As for here, I would not suggest the Monon. It's too crowded. There is a path called the Fall Creek Corridor that we walk a lot. Less crowded, but there are still some people on it. You can catch it where Allisonville Road ends and 37, Binford Road, intersect.

Any human park (vs. dog park) with Jake on lead would probably be good. Plenty of room in case he gets anxious, lots of good smells, and some opportunities to meet people. Benches to sit on. Be sure to take good treats and make it a happy experience for him. Also stop before he is ready to stop, again, so he will look forward to doing it again. Maybe arrange for people you know to "accidentally" meet you someplace and basically ignore Jake so he gets used to the feel of human-human interaction where he is not the focus. I think you will have fun!
