story on Pit Bull Attack

Connie on Activities - Wed, June 18 2008

Did anyone see the story about the pit bull that turned on its owner in Greensburg? I hate it when I see these stories. Everyone at work is now talking about how vicious pit bulls are and how we need breed legislation. I wish the story had included a photo of the dog. Everyone says pit bull in dog attacks. Not that I'm downplaying this. It is horrible. The woman may lose both arms.

But, I still don't think BSL is the answer.

Here is the story:

Poor woman.... I can just hear the stink rising again about banning pitbulls. *sigh*

I wonder if anyone thought to do an autopsy on the dog? What if it had a brain tumor or some medical issue that no one knew about? I wish the article would have said whether the dog was neutered too.

Good point Connie, I wondered the same things. It is a horrible tragedy for that lady, but it would also be a tragedy if there is a backlash on all the wonderful pitties out there.

So many people are always quick to jump on the "let's ban the dog" bandwagon. sigh. It makes me so sad.

I saw that on the news last night and my stomach turned over. I hate it that it was a pit. WISH TV did say that the owners had the dog since he was a puppy and had never shown any aggressive behavior at all. I do wish someone would have thought to do an autopsy on the dog. There had to be something going on medically to cause that to happen.

Poor woman...I can't imagine the emotional trauma she is facing, as well. I wondered the same about a psychological issue. I once sat for a yellow lab that had some serious, serious aggression issues...linked to a brain tumor.

It always makes me so scared to read these stories. It just gives the pit-haters more ammo.

I saw this last night, and at the end of the piece there were a couple of people doing the usual talk about BSL, but someone, either a neighbor or cop, mentioned something about there having been issues prior to this happening. I'm not sure if they meant with this particular dog, but that was the impression I got. There was also a statement read from the APBT people about how pits are not known to be aggressive to humans without provocation. I'd be willing to bet that there is more to this story than is on the surface. Poor dog, poor woman, poor pit bulls.

I have to agree with Mama Muttblood...I have a sneaking suspicion that there is more to the story. Dogs usually just don't snap if they are previously "normal." Usually it's do to an underlying medical condition or some sort of provocation. Not that I'm dismissing the dog's actions, but calling a breed ban is completely ignorant.

There has to be more to this story than what we know. My heart breaks for that poor woman. I'd like to know if the dog was neutered, too among any other health problems he may have had.

This is horrible and will only fuel people's fears and I agree with y'all thinking there's more to this story.

I felt nauseus after hearing this story on the news lastnight.

I had a somewhat "serious" discussion with my two direct bosses over lunch yesterday over this story. I got so mad as both said "see Connie, pit bulls are dangerous." If I was rich, I would have given someone the money for an autopsy! I kept trying to convince them that healthy, happy, well adjusted dogs do not wake up one morning and eat you, no matter what breed they are.

I'm scared for Titus and any other pittie. I read two different reports lastnight about owners coming home to find their beloved pits bleeding to death in their own backyards because some fool shot them. Neither dog had a history of being anything other than a loving creature. It's the ignorance of today's society that has allowed this to happen. I'm praying for the victim and her family.

I also wondered if he was neutered. I love pit bulls but they aren't for everyone. It could have been so many things. Most likely something genetic. Strudel's breeder has always said a lot about not only breeding to better the breed conformation wise but to make an even more well rounded family pet.

Yesterday I went to visit my brother who has a home in Greenwood. He also has a 11 month old pittie named Bruno. He told me that while he was walking Bruno the night before and some man drove by on a bike and said out loud to a lady that was with him, "I oughta shoot that dawg." My brother was shocked but couldn't believe what he heard. So when I told him about the horrible attack he said he expected people to be even more afraid.

Has anyone ever had success in changing someone's mind regarding dangerous dogs? I don't have much luck. It REALLLY frustrates me.

We saw this the other night, too. It's a horrible situation. I also wondered if the dog was neutered and if there would be any sort of necropsy or anything. I also wished they would have showed a picture of the dog...before they killed it.

My Mom worried herself halfway to an ulcer when she found out I'd adopted a pitbull. It didn't help that the first time I brought him down to her house he growled at her when she came out to greet us. I'd only had him 2 days at that point and he was already being protective of me. Now it's a completely different story. The traitor is more protective of his Erin and Grandmoe than me. Mom isn't scared of pits now. She's said that she won't feel as safe once we move out. And Mom's BF Norm loves Titus. His big farm dog Bear just passed away earlier this year from old age. I think Mom's working on him to adopt a pit. I took Titus down to Norm's for a BBQ and changed is brother and nieces opinion on pitbulls. His niece's were apprehensvie at first but by the end of the night Titus was crawling into their laps to snuggle.

I think most people who are scared of them just haven't seen a normal, lovable pit bull. They may have never seen one period. The media loves to play into people's fears in order to sell papers, magazines, etc. It's really sad how misinformed people are because of the media. If they aired every single story of a car wreck and told everyone how dangerous a car can be, some people would want to ban cars to save everyone!! There are too many reactionary people in the world. Think first, then act!! Sorry, I'm ranting again. ;)
