helping feral cats

Connie on Activities - Thu, July 03 2008

Last Sunday I helped spay/neuter 59 feral cats. I was helping the Feral Cat Bureau of Indiana. It was so rewarding. Besides fostering, I think this is the most rewarding animal thing I've done. It really felt like I was making a difference.

I helped in the recovery area. Once the cats were done in surgery, they were given a rabies shot, some fluids, and then brought to tables where volunteers like me monitored them. We also cleaned their ears (so much easier to do when the cat is sleeping) and applied a dose of Revolution. We even gave a couple of cats waterless baths.

I can't imagine what those wild kitties thought when they woke up!

After the cats are done, their caretakers take them back to their colonies and release them.

If you want to learn more, I wrote a long post on my blog: www.saveindianaanimals.blogspot.com

Wow! That's way cool. 59 cats sounds like a lot, or is it? Is that a high number or a low number? Do they do it every Sunday? Great job, Connie!

Edit: I read on your blog where it said they take in around 100 cats a month. So do they do the spay/neuter once a month?

yes, they they generally do more cats, but they only had one vet instead of two. They do it monthly. So, it was a good day for me to volunteer for the first time as it wasn't as busy as usual. But, it still seemed busy to me.

I saw Greg Brush on fox 59 (i think) a week or so ago. He had a feisty little beagle with him. I'm so glad FBI does what they do AND you too! :)

Sounds like this would be very rewarding. There's no way I could be around that many cats - asthma city. I hope your post gets other to help.

What you did was great. That may be something I would be interested in doing. I am also proud that my vet's office participates in this program. Way to go Allisonville Animal Hospital!!

Jenna, I was so Impressed with Allisonville. They have adoptable animals and donate their time. They are just great people it seems!
