BEWARE OF STRONGYLOIDES

Cheryl on Health - Mon, July 07 2008

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND DOING A FECAL TEST ON YOUR NEW PUPPY BEFORE BRINGING IT INTO YOUR HOME! I purchased a puppy from Barton's Yorkies in Lebanon and when I took it to my vet found out it had strongyloides. This is a parasite that not only infects dogs but can be transmitted to humans. So, what was suppose to a happy event has turned into my worst nightmare!! My puppy has been in quarantine under professional care for 3 weeks and still NOT cured. It may take months! This is the second puppy from this breeder with this parasite that I know of - though some say it is rare and seem mostly in puppymills. My other dogs and all family members have had to take preventative medicine. I had to disinfect my whole house, wash or dry clean everything possible, have my carpeting cleaned.... I can't even talk about the time and money this has cost us and we are not done yet! I could have saved myself alot of heartache and money by taking the time and a mere $25 to have a fecal test done before purchasing. Please learn from my mistake!

Wow! I have never heard of this before but I will do some research on it. I feel bad for you and I hope things get better fast. I'm sure you informed the breeder about this. Are you going to have the breeder pay your vet/medical bills? Good luck.

Are you the person who was referred to in this post here?

Sorry to hear about your puppy issues. Charlie had to have a bunch of stuff taken care of when he was little, but he wasn't from a breeder... From a not-so-good shelter instead.

Well...I just did my research and this is nasty. If I were you, I would get in touch with AKC and report this breeder. I'm sure you are getting papers on your puppy.
It looks like to me that it is hard to get rid of when breeding.

We hope your puppy gets through this and that breeder stops breeding. Penelope had parvo when we got her. We found out 3 or 4 days after we brought her home. She had coccidia, giardia, roundworms, upper resp infection and pneumonia, too. She almost didn't make it. We had to bleach everything. A $25 fecal test would have at least let us start treatment sooner. We will be praying for you and your puppy.

I'm pretty sure that was the "breeder" that Alena posted about earlier. We are so sorry you are going through this, and you will be in our prayers.

Weren't we just talking about Barton's last week in the "Irresponsible Breeder" post? Problems with liver shunts and contagious parasites - a vet that would not recommend them anymore. This is a frightening and terrible experience! We all hope that your be'be gets well soon, and we know that your darling Suzette will look after you throughout the ordeal. xoxo

I have received alot of wonderful posts from my fellow animal lovers - THANK YOU! I felt obligated to tell my story in hopes that it will help others from finding themselves in this situation. I did contact the breeder and she is claiming that my vet is wrong even though the breeder's vet agreed with my vet's diagnosis. So, we incurring all costs. Originally the vet suspected Liver Shunt but it has been ruled out for now (liver shunt can show up anytime during the first year or two)The puppy is CKC registered and I have been on their website but didn't see anywhere to file a complaint but will look further into it. The saving grace in all of this is the wonderful care and support my little one is receiving from my vet and her staff! I highly recommend Westwood Animal Hospital in Brownsburg!
