Sleeping problems

Brittany on Behavior - Thu, July 31 2008

Hey all -

Rosey is up and going again! She has finally adjusted to a new home - and feels she needs to get up in the middle of the night and play! Any ideas on how to train her to go back to bed? We've tried ignoring her - but then she just whines.

However i have noticed - that she chews her rawhide to sleep. haha.

Welcome to my world! Nigel used to do that constantly (and I actually posted something similar). It seems he's grown out of it and hasn't gotten up to have a "midnight party" in quite a while. We ignored him too and he would body slam the bed, so I understand that ignoring doesn't really work. Our trainer told us that if he wasn't a good sleeper, he shouldn't sleep in our room, but I really liked having him there so we just toughed it out... I hope some other people have some suggestions!

Yeah our old dog miller would sleep thru the entire night - sometimes into the morning if he was feeling particulary lazy. so we are definitely not used to having a 2 am party - but we might as well get used to it right with a new baby arriving..HA! And you could tell him to go to bed if he did wake up - and he would unless he felt sick - then he would continually bug us.

Hey at least - being a new puppy - she's almost potty trained and goes outside regularly now - except during the day when were not home (but she goes in her crate)...so that's good.

This morning i also discovered - when she was scratching at the bathroom door - she wanted to lay on the towels - so i grabbed one and laid it next to the bed - and off to dreamland she went. G if i would have known it was that easy - i would have done it a long time ago...haha

Tonight i think i'll set up the pack'n'play and see how she does.

I'm not sure if it was the reason, but the 'midnight party' seemed to stop when i got him a bed - before he was just laying on blankets. i got a big dog bed for $15 at costco and he loves it.. maybe rosey just needs her own special bed, whether it be towels or a pillow or something?

As for the going in her crate, it may be too big for her. We had that issue with Nigel and had to use a divider so he could just lay down, turn around and that was it.

Yeah my Mother-In-Law has a smaller crate and a small dog bed for her that she's bringing over tomorrow.

We're just using the one we had from Miller (who was about 50 or 60 lbs - compared to Rosey - about 15 lbs). I think we are going to see if we can get her into the crate at night but leave the door open in our room. Who knows :)

it's definitely funny listening to my husband (who has never had a puppy in his life - i've had 2) get frustrated with her when she doesn't mind. But i have noticed since Miller - his temperment towards messes and annoyances has went away.

Which is a good thing since he's got a baby on the way :) My husband is/was the same way. His family dog is 16 and he can't remember benny being anything but perfect, so Nigel was an adjustment too :)

We actually initially just stacked boxes in the back of the crate and then got a divider - we just bought a big crate as well.

I can testify! In Life Before Cherie, FiFi and CeeCee would gnaw on their chewies for awhile, then FiFi would curl up in her spot next to my pillow and CeeCee would go to sleep at the foot of the bed. Now that Cherie's joined the family, okay, WILD NIGHTS!! She is so playful and loving, she wants to be right up next to someone - FiFi is territorial about her sleeping spot, and so I end up with one on each side. Yes, bad habits to have the dogs in the bed with me at all....but don't most of us do it? As she gets more acclimated, I'm sure she'll settle down, but these girls rolling around in the bed half the night either playing or vying for "who gets closest to Mom" is robbing me of my sleep. ~~~yawn~~~ I told them last night they would have to start sleeping in their room if they don't settle down. :) ha ha - yea right. xoxo Diane

So far all I've ever had to do with my cats who liked to play every day at 6am weekend or weekday. If we open the bedroom door (they sleep with us) then the cats would play out in the family room and we could go back to sleep. It seems they are content just being awake and don't especially feel the need to bug us. :)

I used to be a chewie before bed type of girl but now that I sleep in a tent every night and have calmed down some, I no longer have the urge to chew before my eyes droop.

a tired dog is a good thing... walk, walk, walk before bedtime. We have a no ball time in our house so I can't play for about an hour before bed to keep me relaxed.
