scratching at the doors!

Brittany on Behavior - Tue, August 05 2008

Here's a new one. Rosey is doing great getting used to a new life. So far she is potty training like a pro, she is sitting when told, and learning to ly down. She is one smart little cookie - which must be the jack in her.

However, we have assumed a new issue. Scratching at the door to go get something outside of the bedroom when hubby and i are trying to sleep. We really can't ignore her b'cos she'll just keep doing it. So any suggestions on breaking this habit?

Thanks.

Does she respond to 'no?' Or you could teach the command 'leave it.' which might work.

Otherwise, I would try putting something in front of the door for a few nights to see if she gets out of the habit or spray the door with something like bitter apple. Or put her in a crate in your bedroom.

Good luck!

I will do that when I have to potty. Does she need to go out? How about letting the door open just a crack if you trust her.

If none of those suggestions work, I would put some Sticky Paws on the part of the door that she is scratching. It is like double sided tape and deters cats from scratching on things because they don't like the sticky on their claws. I would assume that dogs would feel the same way. I would also keep a spray bottle of water at my bedside and spray her with it as soon as she starts to scratch while saying NO in a loud voice.
