Learning to hold a dumb bell

Batman on Training - Wed, August 06 2008

Mom is trying to teach me to hold a big piece of wood called a dumb bell. I do NOT like it. I like to hold my toys. I like to hold a stick. I liked to hold the dead rabbit I killed (until Dad hid it from me).

But, Mom says if I want to get more letters behind my name then I have to learn to hold this dumb bell and after I learn to hold it, I have to learn to go pick it up and bring it back. Then I have to learn how to wait, watch mom throw it over a jump, jump the jump, then bring it back. Sheesh, the things I will do for some pieces of hot dog.

I could learn to fetch a small plastic dumb bell, but NO I have to learn on a big wooden one as that's what I will have to fetch if I go onto the next level of Schutzhund competition.

Tonight for the first time I actually held it in my mouth without spitting it right out. Mom was really happy and gave me cheese and hot dogs, so that was ok. Maybe I'll try it again sometime and see if I get more cheese, or maybe mom will bring the rabbit back.

Batman, you are so smart! You do all kinds of stuff! Isn't it funny what our moms want us to do sometimes? If it gets you hot dogs and cheese though, it's totally worth it! What I wouldn't do for a REAL hot dog! Maybe that CGC training would go better if we had REAL hot dogs! - hint to my mom

My mom wants to know if your mom will teach me how to hold something on command. I hold things when I want to, carry them all over the place, but I am not inclined to hold them when she asks.

I vote for real hot dogs, Bev....I bet the training might go a lot easier.

You're braver than me, Batman. No way would I carry around that thing. 1 - it's not round; 2 - it's not green and 3 - it's not called a tennis ball. Nuff said.

Mom is using clicker training for this. First, I got clicked for sniffing the dumb bell, then for opening my mouth near it and now for opening my mouth and letting mom hold it in my mouth. Then last night for the first time Mom let go of it while it was in my mouth and I held it myself.

Once I learn to hold it until given the "out" command, then I'll be able to learn to go pick it up. Mom says this is called "backward chaining" meaning I'm learning the last part first. Then she will "chain" together the entire behavior.

I would NOT do anything unless there were real hot dogs.

Beverly, please tell me you are not working for tofu dogs!

Hmmm..I think I'll train my mom to hold a dumb bell. Cause there's no way I'm gonna do it!

I'm so not there yet. Mom said we probably won't do Schutzhund, but will probably work on other related stuff. I'm doing some nose work now, and LOVE it!

St. Huberts is having a dog event at the end of this month. They are an awesome group. If I can get a retrieve and a send away, then I can get Batman going on his next St. Hubert's leg.

I'll tell mom that we need to look into this after I quit barking at other dogs when on a leash. Where do you train for this?
