HELP!!! Escape Artist

Erica on Behavior - Sun, August 24 2008

Some of you who know me, know that I decided to keep my beagle foster, Laverne, after Penny passed away. I have had her since May and she is just now starting to dig under the fence and escape. Everytime I fill in her current escape route, she digs a new one. I was just wondering if there were any suggestions b/c right now I have to tie her up in the fenced in yard, which does not let her get much exercise with the other dogs. I would appreciate any suggestions!!!!

Thanks
Erica

PS-I will have her profile up shortly. She is a doll besides the escaping!

Is it a privacy fence? If so, here's what I did with my first dog. I went and bought 2 by 4 wood plans, and then put 2 cement blocks on the ends of them. I had them all around the fence. He didn't get out after I put them up.

I put wooden railroad tie kind of wood around the base of the fence. But, if the dog digs under those, then you could put some kind of fence, like chicken wire a foot or so inside the fence, then put the railroad ties on top of that. Then the dog will dig into the wire.

we've read about taking chicken wire and laying it like an "L" shape along the ground and up the existing fence. Bury the portion that lays on the ground. I haven't used the ground portion but we've used chicken wire to line picket fences that were too far spaced at my parents house where Ojo would walk thru them when she was a pup.

I've also seen, and am planning on, stapling (or otherwise attaching) high grade chicken wire to the botton of the fence, and fold it along the ground for at least a foot. Then, you cover that with attractive cobbles or other largish rocks of your choice. The rocks keep the paws off the chicken wire, but does tend to keep escape artists in.

I'm having the same problem with Dolly. To add to it, the neighbor's dogs are helping her dig under the fence so they can escape into our yard or she into theirs. They are sweet dogs and all, so I don't mind them over here, but Dolly has now cut herself on the fence. Let me know if you find a working solution. Our trainer also told us to lay chicken wire on the ground and put the dirt over it so that when they dig, they hit the chicken wire.

A beagle breeder told my son to use chicken wire along the chainlink fence to keep his beagle from digging his way out. You lay it down in a "L" shape like Ojo mentioned. For the ground part, cut the grass REAL short and then lay the chicken wire down. The grass will grow through the wire and it will never be seen. Cutting the grass over the wire will not be a problem.

That's a lot of votes for chicken wire!

Thanks everyone! I think I will try one of the suggestions. Hopefully it will also convince Rocko, my foster dog, to stop helping her!
Thanks again

I am not familiar with where I would buy chicken wire...might be a dumb question but if you have a suggestion that would be nice!
Thanks Marci and I am sure Lavern will eventually thank you as well! :)

Yep, it is a privacy fence so there is no jumping over it at least...lol

TSC (Tractor Supply Center) seems to have the best prices and the most options. That's where I'm going to get mine, along with the fencing I haven't bought yet, either. Gotta get out there and clear that area of weeds and stuff first.

We did exactly this, thanks to Daisy, when we adopted Lola. She's so small she could get out of spots under our chain link fence. It took some time and effort but IT WORKS!! My husband also made sure the fencing was pushed all the way to the grass. Over time it can heave up.

Another vote for chicken wire!!

TSC is my FAVORITE store (lots of cool horsey items). They do have lots of great fencing options.

Thanks Connie. I will check it out.
