poor poor Heidi

Heidi on Health - Thu, August 28 2008

This morning I let the dogs out about 2:00 am to potty . I didn't have much light on and we were just going to head outside and them back to bed. Heidi tripped coming out of her cage and I thought it was just the noise that scared her. After alot of lovies she seemed fine and went out to potty. When she came in she seemed to be limping so I turned on more light and saw some blood on the floor. It looks like one of her nails is stripped . I can't see a break but it's not black anymore .I watched her for a while and cleaned it. I checked about an hour later , it had stopped bleeding. I put her to bed and checked her this morning and it looked about the same but a little blood was on it.. She has eaten but seems very quiet today and is still limping . I think I will take her to the vet tomorrow for my sake if not hers! Her cage is a typical one from Petsmart but when I felt along the lip right under the door , there were a couple of sharp places which I covered with bedding , so please check your cages, too. There was nothing else in her cage that I can find to hurt her and her nails were not long .

Poor little Heidi. I know sharp edges can be bad on those crates. Daisy went through 3 crates because she broke the wires. We had to use wire cutters so she wouldn't hurt herself. The last crate we brought was heavy duty and she couldn't break the wires by biting. She finally quit that bad habit.

I hope Heidi's nail heals up quickly. Give her a hug for us.

Poor Heidi...I ripped my nail out once, lots of blood for a few minutes but it stopped. Scared my mom, though. It grew back. Mom just kept it clean and dry, so I didn't need to go to the vet.

It looks wet kind of a white nail with blood on it but it doesn't get better or worse. She doesn't want me near it , what should I do ?

I'd err on the side of caution and take her in - especially because it is bothering her when she walks. I'd fear secondary infection too. If the nail is cracked or cut into the quick, it will heal and return to normal but it'll take some time.

called the Vet and they said bring her in so... they sedated and cut the nail off. Hopefully a new one will grown in . I could have left it alone ( much cheaper) but it was so sore that every time she and Gretchen played it would have hurt . She is back home and kind of dopey but fine
