Someone called the police

Connie on Grief - Mon, September 08 2008

Well, evidently, our bark collars aren't doing such a great job. Today when I got home there was a notice in the door from the police saying they had gotten a complaint about barking dogs.

We talked to our neighbors on both sides of the house and they said the dogs were fine. They both have dogs and have promised if our dogs ever annoy them that they will let us know.

So, we suspect the grumpy man three houses down. I know he has lit firecrakers before when the dogs were barking.

He also has yelled obscenities when they bark, but he yells at the kids playing too.

Draco has the strongest bark collar and yet he still barks whenever a squirrel crosses the power line. I'm wondering if we covered his kennel if that would help.

Yesterday, I was home all day and didn't have the bark collars on the dogs and Draco barked once at a squirrel and everyone else was quiet. So, I really don't think they are sitting out there barking 8 hours. Plus, I feel fairly confident that our two next door neighbors would let us know since both are retired and are home all day.

So, now I'm totally stressed. I like the dogs outside in their kennels as they can run, play with their bones, etc. If they were in the house they would have to be crated.

But, now I'll worry I'll come home and find my dogs confiscated.

sigh.

Neighbors like that drive me nuts. Where is the good old days where you went and talked to someone? Dogs bark. I highly doubt that thd dogs were barking for 8 hrs a day too unless he was standing on the other side of the fence taunting them.

That would annoy me -- especially when your direct neighbors didn't have complaints. Would they write a statement for you (even if it does nothing more for now... so you have it in the future if needed)?

I would crate the dogs for the next couple of days just to "cool off" the neighbor and keep my sanity but boy I'd let them bark away at all the squirrels in the yard when I was home!

It's always the grumpy old men, isn't it... Did you see the post I wrote about the old man on his bike who yelled at Hoover? Is there anyway you can call the police and find out who called them?

Right after adopting Titus someone called the police on me saying I was abusing him. He had serious seperation anxiety issues and would bark constantly while I was gone to work. The thing that set me off was that the officer was there when I pulled up from work. My apartment complex had taken a nosedive at that point so seeing a squad car was nothing unusual. He watched us as I took Titus out and then put the notice on my door w/o even talking to me. I called the phone number on the notice and they wouldn't tell me anything.

That's just weird. You would think he would've at least spoken with you to see your reaction or hear your side of the story. My old neighbors had a beagle, and when they would come home that dog would make this really weird howling sound. It sounded like someone was killing her, but she was just happy to see her people!! :)

Connie, I'm sorry you had to deal with this. I don't like controversy, and I hate to say anything to my neighbors. However, I feel if something is not bothering me enough to talk with them, than it should not bother me enough to call in on them! He/She could've at least written you a letter and put it in your mailbox before calling.

Curt is going to call the policeman who left the notice tomorrow. Curt talked to three of our neighbors, all of whom were home all day and none of them said they heard the dogs barking. This makes me so mad. If I knew for sure which person called, I would just go talk to that person.

Curt is online looking at different bark collars to see if he can find one that is better than what we have.

The neighbors directly behind us work in their yard all day, but we have tried to block the dog's sight line so they can't see those people out in their yard. They are the ones who yelled at me twice for letting my lawn clippings go into their yard when I mowed (we share a fence).

OMG, Lawn Clippings!! With all the problems in this world, they choose to complain about lawn clippings!? I wish I had time to worry about such trivial things. Connie, they might be flipping the house next door to me. I'll let you know when it goes on sale. We can combine resources and help each other with fosters!! You can throw your lawn clippings on my yard, and I'll throw mine on yours!! :)

I've had AC called on me. Well, not me directly but right after we got Freckles, they were called to the barn. My friend had taken back a pony of hers that had nerve damage in her front leg so she "knuckled under" with her hoof on that leg. She was also skinny when she came back. They were building houses alongside the barn and I'm sure it was someone there that called. They showed up with a trailer and all-ready to take all the horses. Luckily we were able to show that the farrier had just been there, the pony had food and water(she was being kept separate when she got back), they checked body condition on all the horses and make my friend show all her vet info from the previous year when the injury happened. I was pretty freaked out. It's crappy when your neighbors don't just talk to you. We have an anal neighbor that hates dogs and doesn't like our grass clippings either. He's now building a "wall" of plantings and paving stones to keep our weeds on our side I guess.

We had a lady that was going to call the police at adoptions on Saturday because "a man was killing a dog". It was one of the founders of the rescue and the dog had bitten him. He was alpha rolling him afterwards and the dog hated it and was crying. She didn't seem to believe any of us and said that she was against animal cruelty totally. Hmmmm, yeah so are we. That's why it's a rescue and rehab group. I'm glad that people are so aware of things but you also have to believe people when they're telling the truth esp. when it's rescue people who are doing adoptions!

AT least you didn't get an anonymous postcard saying...DEAD DOGS DON'T BARK. We're pretty sure it was from a grumpy middle-aged man next door who, thankfully, moved shortly after we moved in. He appeared to have more problems than just grumpiness, like some sort of paranoid diagnosis. I would try covering Draco's kennel. We cover the girls' crates at night so they don't react to everything they see and hear through the windows. It helps tremendously.

Idiots. Don't they realize that firecrackers and yelling makes dogs bark more???

I forgot that happened to you. That is MUCH worse.

I am sorry that you and the dogs have to deal with a grumpy person. I had a neighbor call on my previous dog. She was 15 at the time and sick(made a huge stinky mess in the laudry room). I put her outside while I cleaned the floor and walls(she was never out unless I had her on a leash and was with her). it took a lot of time to clean and she was very unhappy about being outside without me! I too was very sad and already crying when the police came because I knew that something was very wrong with my precious Tasha. Good luck.

I'm so sorry this happened. It has to be as much frustrating as scary. I have a little old lady next door (one of the EXTREME cat ladies who feeds the strays, but doesn't vet them). I've been working on the barking, but she's made it so much harder than it should be. She has taken to barking back at the dogs. At least there are others in the nieghborhood that make mine seem quiet. I'd be low man on the totem pole.

Our neighbor on one side has four dogs and the other has two dogs. Our three houses are like a barking boardwalk. I'm sure that just instigates the dogs when the lady barks back at them. I bet she looks pretty stupid, too.

Sorry that happened to you Connie. Like you and others have suggested I would try the kennel cover. It sounds like the person who called the law is just being a mean turd. Especially if your close neighbors have had no issues.

OMG!! She's seriously barking at them and not just playing around? I play with my girls and bark at them, but I've never thought of that as a way to make them quiet! Does she really think barking at them is going to make them stop? HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! ROFL!!! I didn't know people could be so silly! I so want to come to your house and see this!

Please don't take offense, but I probably would have called AC, too. Criticizing someone or questioning them on how they handle or raise their animals is not usually seen as constructive. Most owners go into defense mode. I'm glad everything worked out for you. I'm also glad that Indy's AC is responsive and doing their jobs well. That is comforting.
