Should I be worried?

Rhonda on Health - Thu, September 11 2008

Gordon has had running poop since we brought him home about 6 weeks ago. When we first brought him home, we had to give him deworming medicine and he was on a harsh anitbiotic for 10 days due to an upper respiratory infection so I wasn't really worried about the runny poop figuring it was from all the meds. Then we switched foods about 2 weeks ago, so again I wanted to wait a little while before becoming concerned. But twice in the past 10 days, my husband has come home to what he calls a "poop storm". Gordon is not crated because he totally detests his crate and bent the bars on it. Plus is a actually pretty well behaved while we are gone. Anyway, I am beginning to get concerned about Gordy. He is a VERY happy go lucky boy and really shows no sign of any illness, but this can't be normal. We feed them Diamond Naturals Chicken and Rice. I got desparate enough last night that I stopped at Petsmart and got some medicine that is for diarrhea and also some Probiotic pills. Have any of you used any type of anti-diarrhea medicine? Does it really work? Usually when our kids get rumbly tummies, I just give them a Pepto, but I thought Gordon's problems required more specific help. Is there anything else I can do to help him? I know about cottage cheese and yogurt, but thought the probiotic pills might work better. Can I still give him yogurt on top of the pills, or is that too much? We love Gordy and will continue to clean up any messes he makes, but I want to get his poor digestive system on track and stop the running poo. My husabnd is taking him to an adoption event on Saturday, so he is going to talk to the IGPR coordinator about this but I thought I'd ask you all for some advice.

Has he had a stool re-check yet? That would be a good starting point and have them check for Giardia, Coccidia and an overgrowth of bacteria(Sweetie had that in May). Meanwhile you could give him canned pumpkin to help firm it up. Probiotics are great and we use them with diarrhea with great results. I would go with the pumpkin rather than the yogurt at this time. I have never used diarrhea medicine on any of mine. He could be allergic to chicken as well and that could cause the diarrhea. I can't imagine how much poop comes out of dog that size:-)

There is bland food that can be purchased from your vet, Science Diet I/D. It is for messed up tummies and helps them settle down. Kirby used that when he had an intestinal infection last year. It has lots of rice in it. Maybe try a mixture of pumpkin and rice of your own!

I was thinking the same thing as Dachsaholic....those must be big poop storms. Poor puppy (and you).

A LOT of poo.lol

No he hasn't been re-check so I suppose I better call Jane tonight and ask what they want us to do. I completely forgot about the pumpkin, I'll get some on the way home and give that a try. I hate to keep switching food not knowing if that is causing the problems. Don't get me wrong, we will do whatever it takes but we had him on the Lamb and Rice formula and thought that was causing the issue so we switched to Chicken. Guess we better start with a re-check of him stool sample and go from there. THANKS!

Luckily my husband gets home about an hour before I do, so he's had to be on clean up duty. hehehe

You can also rest his gut and not feed him for a day. It won't hurt him any and will give him a chance to get cleared out and let his gut take a little break. I'm going to tell Jerry what your hubby has to do. I bet he'll never complain about Doxie poop again!

I was going to say that about the chicken too. We could never get Loki's poo straightened out. After numerous trips to the Vet and lots of antibiotics, cottage cheese and rice we took him to emergency. The Vet at the emergency gave him probiotics and told us to switch from chicken. We changed to Nature's Variety Lamb & Brown Rice and he finally has normal poo.

Good golly I can be blonde sometimes! I just went to dogfoosanalysis.com and realized that eventhough we switched foods,I am still giving them chicken. We switched from Large Breed(which is chicken based) to Chicken and Rice Formula. For some reason I thought the Large Breed was Lamb based....sheesh, I should really pay more attention to the ingredients. So switching foods gained me nothing, all I did was switch to a smaller kibble size. Guess I will get a bag of the Lamb and Rice Formula and slowly switch them over.

Titus is extremely sensitive to antibiotics. That's always when I can expect a "poop-splosion" out of him. So I always add some plain active culture yogurt to his dry kibble during and after the course of meds. This seems to help tone down the explosions a bit. But if it still happens thats when I feed him plain steeamed white rice mixed with cottage cheese until his poo firms up.

eek! Mom has come home to butt explosions in our house too! Last time me and Moj had this, it cost Mom a couple of trips to the ER and lots of Treat money!

We both had to get shots and prescription meds PLUS tummy settling pills.

We were told canned pumpkin can have the opposite effect -- soften the stools so not to give them to the girls. We were given the science diet ID and it helped a LoT to firm the girls up.

Good luck -- it's a yucky process.

Actually canned pumpkin can work for constipation or diarrhea. With constipation, it provides fiber to get 'er moving. With diarrhea, the fiber absorbs the extra water in the stool and helps to firm it up. So you can't go wrong with a little pumpkin with poop problems.

Tilly had soft-to-runny poops when we put her on deworming meds and for about 2 weeks afterwards. We didn't know what to think because we were switching her from her pppy food to another kind and then to adult food. I added rice. I added yogurt. I finally added pumpkin. I don't know about you but I won't be eating chocolate pudding for a while...good luck with Gordy.
