city to seek professional

Connie on Activities - Thu, September 11 2008

Wow, I think someone is reading our posts. This was just posted on the Star website:

City seeks professional to run animal shelter

Staff report

The job of managing Indianapolis'Animal Care and Control traditionally has gone to someone with political connections, but those days may be over. The city may soon hire its first-ever animal welfare professional, a person trained specifically to manage a shelter for unwanted dogs and cats.

"We have a strong desire to hire someone recognized for professionalism in the field," said Scott Newman, who, as public safety director, oversees the city's Animal Care & Control division.

Newman made the comments during a press conference today after the resignation of shelter administrator Steve Talley.

Talley's resignation was prompted after a 10-day investigation of problems at the shelter found evidence backing up several alleged cases of neglect, including an incident in which a cat was left to die in a pool of its own blood after a botched euthanasia attempt. The charges were lodged last month by animal advocates.

It is about time. I can't imagine hiring someone not qualified or trained for the position. No wonder, it was such a sorry mess. I am glad to hear this good news.

I'm glad. I tried Indpls. Care and Control first and adopted a puppy. He had to stay there for 4-6 days because they didn't have a nueter opening at my vet, until then. When the puppy was finally sent, the vet said he was sick with a liver disease. He was not like that when I adopted him or even when I went back to see him. He had gotten sick there and no one seemed concerned when I went to get my refund and turn the puppy back over to them. You think they would care that a puppy had caught something while being there. I went to Johnson Care and Control instead and couldn't be happier that they let me take Roxy home that day, and to this day she is perfectly healthy.

This is a no-brainer to me. Why WOULDN'T you hire someone who KNOWS how to run a shelter to RUN A SHELTER?! It's a good thing they don't hire school principals this way.

Hopefully this will be an opportunity to get someone into the position that is open to no-kill.
