Need some advice

Donis on Behavior - Wed, November 19 2008

Our newest adoptee, Gypsy is having what I am assuming is separation anxiety issues. And while I know that is to be expected, I need some help. Nearly every time we place her in her crate and leave the house, she will poop and then walk in it. She tends to pace a bit in her crate. Her crate is not too big, I tried her in a couple different sizes and it happens no matter which one she is in. I have tried covering the crate with a sheet, I have tried giving her a KONG while in there, I have tried having her be in there for periods of time while I am home to get her used to crate. I have placed the crate right next to her play mates and cover them together so she can see him at all times. I leave the TV on so there is noise and talking when we are gone. She is never in there for more than an hour or 2 tops. She always goes out to potty just prior to going in, so that is not the issue. My husband is getting really frustrated with having to give her a bath every time we come back home and bleach down the crate.....not to mention the smell that hits you when you open the front door. She is for the most part completely house trained and is about 2 years old. She has been with us for a little over 2 weeks and has bonded quite well. Any thoughts on this?

I think someone else was having a similar issue recently, and it was quite timely since one of the dog shows on animal planet had just had an episode about a situation like that. I think it was "It's Me or the Dog". I wish I could find a video clip of the episode. It was a long process, but consisted of putting the dog in the crate for 2 minutes, then coming in and rewarding him, then 5 minutes, then 30 minutes.... etc... Anyone else see this that can give better detail?

If she can "pace a bit" in the crate, its way too big! She shouldn't have more room that to just lay there and turn around a bit....like a snuggly cave. Maybe if its more like a bed, she won't do it? Make it small, snuggly, and have blankets that smell like you?

I used to have the same issues when I came to live with my mom and dad. They simply baby-gated me in the bathroom and I didn't have any problems from that point on. I am a puppy mill survivor so mom figured the crate was just too stressing for me. Don't know if that is an option for you or not.
