Dog bites are a disease??

Kim on Breeds - Thu, February 11 2010

SAW THIS ON PETPLACE.COM.......

The Centers for Disease Control studies dog bite incidents, including the types of dogs most likely to bite. I don't believe in putting labels on dogs. I think each dog is unique and that the owner can play a big role in making the breed more or less aggressive. However, this is a government study based on actual bite incidents
The breeds that the CDC considers highest risk include:

1. Pit Bulls
2. Rottweilers
3. German Shepherds
4. Huskies
5. Alaskan Malamutes
6. Doberman pinschers
7. Chows
8. Great Danes
9. Saint Bernards
10. Akitas

This study was based on REPORTED bite incidents and also does not take any OTHER circumstances of the indcident into consideration. I have also heard of "studies" where the Golden Retriever was number one on the "bite" parade!

Just wondering WHY the Center For Disease Control would do this study - dog bites are not a disease!!!!

I believe the CDC tracks more than just disease, basically anything that can cause adverse health effects.

That's pretty much the case... they track cases of food poisoning to find the cause, track cell phone use and traffic accidents, abuse of women/children/pets, etc.

I know someone who works as an epidemiologist for them, one of her latest projects dealt with domestic abuse.

For what it worth they track gunshot wounds too. All just health issuses. I'll bet Lab's are way up there too, just because there are so many of us. That and I'll bet the little guys, the lap dogs, whould be #1 but who reports a little yorkie, or other small breed bite that just breaks the skin? I had a mini pin bite my nose one time and IT HURT, made it bleed too. I just wanted to greet the little guy, geesh.
