Anal glands are getting me down!

Lucy on Health - Mon, September 17 2007

Okay, so my parents tell me every once in a while that I get "stinky booty". In more medical terms, my anal glands become full and I get the scoots to relieve some of the pressure they cause. Sometimes I just have to scoot and that means I scoot on Moms' rugs. Oops! She's cool though and loves me no matter what I do! I also leave a little "stinky booty" on the couch when I take a nap and become really relaxed. Sorry couch!

Anyhoo, does anyone else have this problem? Dr. Bob said that this problem gets worse during the snowy months and/or the time of the year when I cannot go out and relieve myself on a more regular basis (like soccer season for Daddy). It also is more frequent in Beagles and other hound breeds. My brother Bogart (mini dachshund) does not have this issue, but my Bassett cousins do.

The 'rents need help to see if there are any great home remedies others have used that was successful in decreasing this problem. Diet, exercise or herbal remedies??? I am not a fan of seeing Dr. Bob every 3-4 months to have my glands squeezed, however I feel like a new lady afterward, which is a huge bonus!

Can anyone help?

Okay, I admit it. I have the same problem. Daddy was taking me to PetSmart or the vet every four weeks... so the vet taught Daddy how to express the glands. Now, this isn't something he relishes, or discusses at parties, but he's pretty good at it, and it saves $5 and a lot of stress. Oh, and Lucy just flops on the ground for Daddy. She's such a pushover.
Maybe your vet can teach your parents too.

Mom here: I had a Bassett w/ an anal gland problem so the vet removed it. It's a very tedious operation but it eliminated the problem. You could also have him teach you how to express it.

Sydney and I scoot occasionally, but the only time we ever have an odor is when we get VERY scared and our anal glands get activated. Big stinky Ezra left that fear smell in mom's MINI Cooper and it was hard to get out. She should have known better than to try to push his big butt into that little bitty car. That's how he got his nickname. We don't know if he had any hound in him, but he kind of looked like he might. Some other people were talking the other day about leaving the anal glands alone, so we don't know which is best. Nobody is squeezing Sydney's butt, that's for sure. The highest quality food you can afford for your dog is always the best.

you might need to change your food to a higher quality food (canidae, solid gold, merrick, are some of our favorites)and also you might want to add a raw bone into your chewing schedule a few times a month! we get them at kroger, in the meat department. just ask for the femur bones, and they can cut it into pieces that are appropriate for your size. (be sure to separate dogs, because they might fight over them!) is your vet dr canada? (everyone calls him dr bob, so i was wondering, LOL) we have gone there since 1975 with my first childhood pet. excellent vets, he, and dr hicks! ;o)

Hi,
My vet said little dogs have this more than big dogs, but I see lots of us are plagued with this. He said to add 2 Tablespoons of canned pumpkin. Just pumpkin not pumpkin filling, to my food twice a day. It puts more fiber in the diet and we can express it naturally. It helps a little, but they still fill up more than normal. My mommy has tried and tried to do it for me, and has been shown, but still can express it for me.

I actually just got back from visiting the doctor for this very same problem, this was my first time with this problem and it was not pleasant at all! My mom asked the vet how to prevent this and they also reccomended mom put pumpkin in my food once a week and that should help, he said some people use benefiber and that kind of stuff but that pumpkin tastes much better! Hopefully this helps and I don't have to go through this again!!!
